Vicars swap their gowns for black belts
Updated 17 December 2001, 12.59
Vicars are turning to martial arts for self defence
London Vicars are being offered martial arts lessons to help protect themselves.

They will be able to learn Tae kwon do, a way of defending yourself that is similar to Karate or Judo.

A recent survey showed that vicars are more likely to be attacked than doctors and that up to seven out of 10 vicars had experienced violence of some kind.

Protection without violence

Most threats are made to vicars when they are at home, although some attacks do take place in church.

It's hoped Tae kwon do will help them protect themselves without having to be too violent.
