Race riots caused by people living apart
Updated 11 December 2001, 14.04
Bradford riots
Riots which took place this summer happened because different racial groups in some areas never mix, according to official reports.

Map showing Bradford, Oldham and Burnley
The race riots in Bradford, Oldham and Burnley caused lots of injuries and trouble in the north of England this year.

Now, four major reports into the riots agree they were mainly caused because people from different ethnic groups in these areas lead separate lives.

Single faith schools hit

The actual riots were caused by minor incidents, but they were made worse by racial tensions bubbling under the surface.

Fact File
Key recommendations
Immigrants should have to swear an oath pledging loyalty to Britain
More English and citizenship classes in schools
Change community funding so groups do not have to 'compete' for money
More cash needed for youth services

The reports also suggested local politicians in these areas did not do enough to sort out the problems, and that lack of jobs for young people were also to blame.

The findings could also hit plans to introduce more single faith schools, after fears these could increase the chances of different races living separate lives.
