Light switch art wins Turner prize
Updated 10 December 2001, 16.10
Martin Creed's winning piece
An empty room with two lights flashing on and off has won the UK's most controversial art award.

Pop superstar Madonna presented the Turner Prize to Martin Creed for his work called The Lights Going On and Off.

The artist admitted he couldn't really explain what his piece means.

"I think people can make of it what they like," he said. "I don't think it is for me to explain it."

Blu-tack and paper

Some of his other artworks include exhibits of Blu-tack and screwed-up balls of paper.

The Turner Prize is awarded each year to the best piece of new modern art, and each year there is a row because the winning works are normally, well, odd.

This year, Madonna joined the fray by complaining that awards ceremonies were "silly".

But she did say that "we can't live without good art."

Martin Creed won £20,000 as his prize.
