  Schoolgirl banned for Muslim dress

A 16-year-old girl, Sobia, has been sent home from school in Manchester for refusing to wear school uniform.

Her headteacher, Dame Jean Else, has told her she is not allowed to wear the traditional Muslim dress.

About 200 Muslim sixth-formers wear business-style suits to the school. These suits were agreed with the Commission for Racial Equality.

Everyone who wants to go to her school has to agree to wear the uniform before they start.

Sobia said that her school, Whalley Range High School for Girls, allows scarves so she thought they would accept her dress as part of her religion.

Traditional dress for female Muslims is called the jilbaab and it covers from head to toe.
