  UK music industry targets pirates
Updated 25 March 2004, 14.02
Music piracy is a problem
UK music bosses have announced they're taking steps to stop people illegally downloading music from the internet.

They're launching an online campaign of pop-up messages telling people to get rid of any programmes they use to share tunes or face going to court.

Research found that around seven million people in the UK copy music from the internet without paying.

In January 2004 the sale of legal downloads became the second most popular way of buying singles.

It's most popular among teens, with 12 to 19-year-olds making up 30% of all downloads.

But illegal downloads are still costing the industry money.

New research shows that people who snaffled tracks online spent 32% less on albums and 59% less on singles than they did the year before.

Spokesman Peter Jamieson said: "There is no clearer evidence of the damage that illegal downloading is doing to British music."
