Finding Nemo took almost $340m (£200m) at cinemas in the US and Canada, making it more popular than huge films like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix Reloaded and Bruce Almighty.
Bob Chapek, head of Disney's Buena Vista Home Entertainment group, said some shops had sold three times as many copies as they expected.
