X-Men smashes the global box office
Updated 05 May 2003, 18.01
X-Men 2
X-Men 2 has kerpowed its way through the global box office, earning a mutant 96m ($155m) in its first weekend.

The sci-fi action flick has already made more that half the total the first X-Men film made around the world.

In the US alone, it has gone straight to the top of the box office chart and has become the fourth highest opening film on record.

The big-action movie stars Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Sir Ian McKellen carry on from where the first film left off.

Big release

X-Men 2

The two mutant sides - led by Professor Xavier and the imprisoned Magneto - are forced to fight on the same side to save themselves from the human threat.

X-Men 2 opened in 93 countries on the same day and in the US was shown on 8,000 cinema screens alone. That makes it the largest simultaneous worldwide release ever.

And it's probably a good thing it's raking it in. It cost a whopping 68.6m ($110m) to make!
