Two Towers wins special effects Oscar
Updated 24 March 2003, 07.01
The special effects team: Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Randall William Cook and Alex Funte pose with their Oscars
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers has won an Oscar for its special effects.

Nicole Kidman
It won the award for Best Visual Effects and it beat off blockbusters Spider-Man and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones for the prize.

The Middle-Earth epic also scooped the award for Best Sound Editing.

The Academy Awards went ahead in Hollywood on Sunday night but it was less glitzy than usual because of the war in Iraq.

And it was the war which dominated the ceremony.

Thousands of anti-war protesters gathered outside the theatre where they were held.

And many actors mentioned it in their speeches, some criticising President George W Bush and some showing their support.

Nicole Kidman won best actress award for her role in the film The Hours.

Chicago was the big winner, with six Oscars.

Eminem honour

Eminem
The Two Towers was also up for the top award, best film, but that was won by Chicago, too. There was a great honour for Eminem: the rapper won an Oscar for his song Lose Yourself.

He wrote the song for the film 8 Mile in which he stars.
