Two Towers hoping for Oscar glory
Updated 23 March 2003, 21.38
Legolas
Fans of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers will be hoping it scoops a major Oscar at this year's Academy Awards.

The Oscars ceremony takes place on Sunday night in Hollywood, but it'll be a bit less glitzy than usual because of the war in Iraq.

Some big stars have pulled out of the ceremony altogether - and others are expected to make anti-war speeches.

The movie musical Chicago, with 13 nominations, looks set to win the most Oscars, including best film.

Five nominations

But The Two Towers is also up for the top award.

It's also nominated for:

  • Best art direction
  • Best editing
  • Best sound
  • Best visual effects

    2002 disappointment

    Gandalf
Last year's Oscars were disappointing for Fellowship of the Ring.

Despite 13 nominations, it won just four Oscars - and they were for behind-the-scenes awards like best make-up and best visual effects.

It missed out on the best picture Oscar, and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) didn't win in the best supporting actor category.
