Oscars cutting back on the glitz
Updated 19 March 2003, 12.21

Changes are being made to the Oscars show on Sunday night because the war with Iraq may have started by then.

Normally stars take a slow walk along a red carpet showing off their glitzy outfits to loads of fans and press photographers.

This year they will be dropped off right at the entrance to the theatre where the ceremony is held, and won't be stopping for photos or chats with journalists.

The changes to the pre-show schedule were made after some stars said they wouldn't be happy parading in jewels and expensive outfits while a war is happening.

Shorter speeches

The Oscars is the second most watched programme on US television after American Football's Super Bowl.

At the moment the show itself is going ahead as planned, with stars asked to keep their speeches to talking about the awards, although they are free to talk about Iraq if they really want to.
