Celebs belt it out for Fame Academy places
Updated 07 March 2003, 22.32
The students show their support for each other
Nine nervous celebrities have sung their hearts out on live TV for the chance to spend a week inside Celebrity Fame Academy.

And since it's for Comic Relief, it's safe to say some of their performances might have raised a few smiles already - and it's only Day one!

Fact File
What they sang
Ulrika: You Don't Bring Me Flowers
John: It's Not Unusual
Will: Let Me Entertain You
Jo: You Don't Have To Say You Love Me
Paul: That's Life
Fearne: Killing Me Softly
Doon: Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You
Kwame: Ain't No Sunshine
Ruby: Oh Mickey

Scared Ulrika Jonsson "forgot to breathe" while Fearne Cotton turned into a soulful songstress for the evening.

John Thompson and Paul Ross both belted out karaoke-like versions of their classic fave tracks.

And Paul seemed keen to win. He made sure he told his kids to vote for him!

He also warned if he made it into the Academy, he would be the naughty one in the class.

Kwame's star style

Kwame smouldered!
Kwame smouldered!

But all the teachers agreed Kwame Kwei-Armah's performance of Ain't No Sunshine was - in Carrie's words - "Soulful, stagy - a class above the rest."

She even reckoned he could make records professionally!

Meanwhile Will Mellor tried very hard indeed with Robbie William's hit Let Me Entertain you - but didn't get too much praise from Kevin the dance coach.

He reckoned Will didn't make it light-hearted or smiley enough.

Funny girls

Comediennes Jo Brand, Ruby Wax and Doon Mackichan all held back their nerves. But you could still tell they are more used to making people laugh!

Now it's up to the public to decide who they like best.

At 10.35pm, the two students with the least votes will have their future decided by the others.

One has to go - who will it be?!
