December saw a total of 20 million discs fly off the shelves and into Christmas stockings across the country.
Twice as many discs and players were bought in Britain in 2002 than in 2001, the British Video Association says.
Millions of copies
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring sold four million copies.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone shifted 3.8 million.
And, in third place, animated hit Monsters, Inc sold 2.5 million discs.
Some 3.8 million players were also bought - 1.2 million in December alone.
