The Two Towers opens at last!
Updated 18 December 2002, 18.24
Helm's Deep
Move over Harry, the hobbits are back.

The second in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers opened across more than 10,000 cinemas on Earth - not Middle-earth - on Wednesday.

It's been a year-long wait but the makers are hoping it will be just as popular as the Fellowship of the Ring which made a magical 546m ($860m) at the box office.

The Two Towers

Even before its release, The Two Towers has hit the American Film Institute's top 10 films of 2002.

That's a list which usually gives clues to which flicks could do well at the Oscars in March.

The Two Towers is much darker and more scary than Fellowship. And most lucky people who have had a sneak preview already, say you should either see the Fellowship first or read the book.

Otherwise you will have no idea what's going on because the flick takes off immediately where the first one left - there is no stopping for story recaps!

The final part in the trilogy, The Return of the King, opens at Christmas 2003 and will get its world premiere in Wellington, New Zealand.
