Updated 21 May 2002, 20.06
David Blaine on his pole
David Blaine, the US street magician who amazes crowds with his magical stunts, has started his 35-hour pole stand in New York.

Fact File
Conditions on the pole
Only a 55cm circular platform to stand on
He has a hooded top to keep him warm
He's starved himself for four days
He'll go to the toilet through a tube
He has only a small bit of water with him
He has small metal handles to cling on to
When he comes down he'll jump onto the boxes below

He is to balance on the 24 metre high flagpole until Thursday morning with only cardboard boxes at the bottom in case he falls.

But before he climbed the pole on Tuesday in front of hundreds of on-lookers, he said he had no worries about it.

He said: "My aim is to overcome my greatest fears and this time I am addressing my fear of heights."
