New movie set to boost girls' footie
Updated 12 April 2002, 08.32

Bend It Like Beckham hits the big screens on Friday and it's hoped it'll give girls' football a well-earned boost.

Girls have played football since the 19th century, but it's only been taken seriously relatively recently.

Besides representing their countries at international level, women now compete in league and cup competitions.

"Lately we've seen a huge growth in the sport," says Claire Wheatley who plays for Arsenal Ladies. "Girls as young as five or six are starting to get involved."

Claire also helps out developing younger players and hopes the film will show just how committed the girls are.

Raise the profile

"There wasn't any football at my school," she says, "So I had to play with the older boys on the green. It was great because I would always get picked first."

PE teacher Sarah Swan, who coaches the St Marylebone School team in Westminster, hopes that the film encourages more girls to join in and really raise the profile of the sport, which is becoming the fastest growing sport in the UK.
