Potter and hobbits send cinema sales sky high
Updated 08 March 2002, 18.09
Harry Potter
Massive movies like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings have sent box office numbers soaring.

Film fans went to the cinema 141 million times in 2001 - the highest figures for 30 years.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and The Fellowship of the Ring have caused millions of people to flock to the flicks, despite only being released late last year.

They've also made huge stars out of young actors like Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, who play Harry and Ron in Harry Potter, and Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom, who play Frodo and Legolas in the Rings.

Long way to go

The Potter film is already the second most successful film of all time, only beaten by Titanic.

Cinemas have been hit in the last few years because videos are so easy to hire.

But although figures are up again, there's still a long way to go to beat the film-tastic days of the 1970s. In 1972, a record 157 million people went to the cinema.
