Soap scenes attacked by TV watchdogs

TV watchdogs are getting themselves in a lather over recent strong scenes in our soaps.

They're the people who make sure what we see on our screens is suitable for the audience at different times of the day.

Past bedtime?

But the chairman of the Broadcasting Standards Commission says some soaps are getting too rude, violent and are full of bad language too early in the evening.

And he says they're doing these scenes just to get more viewers.

The soaps are mostly on our screens early in the evening. He reckons they should be on later, when children aren't watching.

The normal time for more adult-type programmes to go out is after what is called the "watershed" at 9pm, when broadcasters think most kids are in bed.

Controversial soapy storylines include drug-taking in EastEnders and a violent hospital attack on Corrie's Steve McDonald.
