Pop Idol Will thought he had lost
Updated 10 February 2002, 11.45
Will celebrates his win
Pop Idol winner Will Young has admitted he thought he had lost moments before the result was announced on the ITV talent show.

He said when the number of votes was announced he thought to himself that he had not done badly to lose by that many votes.

Then he found out he was the winner, grabbing 4.5 million of the 8.6 million votes cast by fans after the live show.

Later Will said: "I am absolutely ecstatic. It's something I have always wanted to do and throughout this competition it's just felt more and more right to sing. I am really ready for it."

Gareth admitted he was disappointed to have lost, but said about Will: "He is just absolutely wonderful. I must say that he is an absolutely awesome guy."

Gareth single out soon too

Despite losing, Gareth will also be releasing a single soon, with the exact date to be revealed within a week by Simon Cowell, who says he will be signing Gareth as well as winner Will.

The record producer and judge on the show said: "there will be an announcement as to what and when his first record will be released and there will be some very, very exciting news attached to that."

All 10 Pop Idol finalists will meet up again to perform two sell-out concerts at Wembley Arena on March 14 and 15.
