Lord of the Rings up for 12 Baftas

The Lord of the Rings could be in for a glittering night at Britain's biggest film awards after being nominated for 12 Baftas.

But it was not such magic news for Harry Potter - the young wizard is in the running for seven prizes, but missed out on a nomination for best film.

Donkey vs Hagrid

A surprising nomination went to Eddie Murphy for Shrek. He could win best supporting actor despite only supplying the voice to the donkey.

He will be up against Robbie Coltrane in that category, who was nominated for playing Hagrid in the Philosopher's Stone.

Most of the nominations for Harry Potter were for behind the scenes categories like make-up and special effects, although it has a chance in the best British film category.

Shrek and Lord of the Rings will battle for three big awards - best film, best adapted screenplay and score - as well a number of technical prizes.

Veteran British actor Sir Ian McKellen could win as best actor for Lord of the Rings, and Peter Jackson could scoop the best director award.

The awards are announced on 24 February - watch this space for more Bafta goss!
