Potter and Rings still rule box offices
Updated 07 January 2002, 17.30
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are still casting a spell over cinemas worldwide and there's no sign of them being beaten by any other flick yet.

The Fellowship of the Ring is top of both the UK and US box office charts.

And Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - or Sorcerer's Stone as it's called in the States - still hasn't lost its charm.

It's been out for seven weeks, and is in second position in the UK and ninth in the US.

No threats

Fact File
Worldwide film totals
Harry Potter: 490m ($700m)
Lord of the Rings: 242m ($350m)

The magic of the two movies looks set to continue for some time with no other films in the running for the top spots yet.

But watch out for the big releases to come in 2002 which might break the spell, including Star Wars: Episode 2, Spiderman and Monsters Inc (already released in the US).).
