Learning aims
  • Some of the differences between UK and US English

  • Learn that the language has different versions called dialects

  • Give alternatives for US English words
Introduction
Read through with the class the story Chamber of Secrets DVD due out soon!

Point out that the English Language has many dialects and that one of the most widely spoken is US English.

Ask the class for examples of where they are likely to hear or see the US dialect. Television, film and music are good suggestions.

The class may already be aware of the first novel's name change from 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' to 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'.

Raise the point that the Harry Potter books sold in the UK and US contain some language differences in the text itself.
