Outline

    Sport shops selling the England shirt are running out of the letter Y thanks to Wayne Rooney's popularity.

    This lesson looks at the use of the letter y as a vowel.


Learning aims
  • That every word needs a vowel
  • That there are five vowels and y can also act as one
  • Solve word puzzles using vowels

Teaching ideas

1.Icebreaker
    Click here to read the story:

    Point out that every word in the English Language needs a vowel in its spelling and that the vowels are a, e, i, o, and u.

    Ask the class to indicate where the vowels are in the headline of the story.

    As every word needs a vowel words like 'by' have the letter y acting as a vowel.


2. Main activity
    The class attempt the first activity on the worksheet:

    Students replace the vowels in the well-known proverbs.

3. Extension activity
    In pairs or small groups the class could select other headlines and well-known proverbs or phrases.

    Each student should remove the vowels from their choices so that they can test others in their group.


4. Plenary
    Recap on the main teaching points and ensure that the class have the correct answers from the activities.
