Learning aims
  • The purpose of personal pronouns

  • Use pronouns appropriately to enhance writing
Introduction
Read through the worksheet version of David Sneddon on target for top spot.

Ask the class what they think could be done to improve the story.

Say that a way of improving this story would be to replace some of the names for a shorter word called a 'pronoun' rather than repeating the name.

Extension activity
Ask the class to write about a friend or relative. Give clear ideas about what they should include in their writing, for example:

  • appearance
  • hobbies
  • friends
  • personality
  • likes and dislikes
They should use the person's name as little as possible but make sure that the writing still makes sense.

Plenary
Recap on the main teaching points and children present their descriptive writing.
