Learning aims
  • Revise dictionary use

  • Increase vocabulary choices
Introduction
Before reading through the following story worksheet with the class, point out that there may be some words they will find difficult:

Ask the class where they would look to find out the meaning of a word.

Provide the class with dictionaries and revise their use by asking them to research the meanings of the words printed in bold.

Main activity
A beetle

Give out copies of these worksheets and ask the children to look up the meanings of the words printed in bold:

Extension activity
The children could compare their definitions of the researched words with those used in the CBBC Newsround stories.

Plenary
Recap on the purpose and use of dictionaries.

Children can present their researched definitions.
