Learning aims
  • The meaning of the word 'prefix'

  • Increase existing knowledge of Greek and Latin prefixes

Introduction
Read through with the class the stories:

Focus on these words and the meanings of their prefixes:

  • conjoined (with)
  • extra-solar (outside/beyond)
  • telescopes (distant)
  • universe (one)

Main activity
Students read the information on the worksheet.

Students work out the correct definitions of the new words from the facts.

Answers for the prefixes worksheet:

1. A decapod is a marine creature with five pairs of legs.

2. An autobiography is the story of a person's own life.

3. An aqualung is a container for divers underwater.

4. The meanings of the prefixes:

  • deci - one tenth (Latin)
  • oct - eight (Greek)
  • ante - before (Latin)
  • post - after (Latin)
  • contra - against (Latin)
5. Decimate, octopus, antenatal, postscript, contrary.

Extension activity
Students research the definitions on the worksheet.

Students find examples of their use and come up with two false definitions to test the class with.

Plenary
Recap on the use of a prefix.

Children share their examples and test the class.
