Learning aims
  • Critically examine the features of reports aimed at a young audience

  • Write their on reports using these features

Introduction
Display our Press Pack section:

Discuss what effect these features have:

  • Bullet points - show that points are being used. They help make it easier to tell what the main points are.

  • Bold print - stands out and catches the reader's eye. Often used for headlines, sub-headings or key words.

  • Paragraph length - shorter paragraphs help your reader read the whole text.

Main activity
Have the students write a Press Pack report for the class to evaluate.

Remind students that a good report needs to answer these questions (known as the '5 Ws' and '1 H'):

  • Who?
  • What?
  • Where?
  • When?
  • Why?
  • How?

Ask students to say which different parts of their report answer these questions.

Extension activity
Students can pick a Press Pack report and annotate it showing how it answers each of the '5 Ws' and '1 H' questions.

Plenary
The class read aloud their reports and show how their work answers the key questions.
