Learning aims
  • Recognise features of information texts

  • Understand the function of each feature
Introduction
Display the story:

Explain to the class why writers organise information texts in certain ways:

  • Easier to read
  • Better presentation
  • Shows changes (time, place, subject, speaker etc)
With the class, decide which features only appear in information texts.

See below for details of the features of an information text.

Main activity
Give out copies of:

The class break the story into an information text format by making clear marks. They should write their reasons for each.

Extension activity
The class can look at chapters in information books and identify the following:

  • Bullet points - show that points are being used. They help make it easier to tell what the main points are.

  • Underlining - highlights important information.

  • Bold print - stands out and catches the reader's eye. Often used for headings or key words.

  • Font size - the bigger the font, the more important the reader will think the information is.

  • Paragraph length - shorter paragraphs help your reader read the whole text.
