  Skimming for meaning
Updated 22 July 2003, 11.36

Learning aims
  • Skim through a text to grasp its meaning

  • Provide written answers to specific questions
Introduction
Explain that being able to get a quick impression of what a text is about is a very useful skill.

Skimming saves you from having to read the whole text very carefully.

Fact File
How to 'skim'
Read the title
Read the start (or the first paragraph)
Read the first sentence of every paragraph
Notice any pictures or charts
Notice any words in bold or italics
Read the end (or the last paragraph)

Display the Press Pack report:

Demonstrate how to skim through a text to find answers to the following questions:

  • What is the story about?
  • Who is the story about?
  • When did the story take place?
  • Why did it happen?
  • Where did it take place?
  • How did it happen?
Main activity

Prince Harry
Prince Harry pulls out an opposing player during the Wall Game

Give out copies of the story:

Explain to the children that they will only have a short time (approx. 5 minutes) in which they will be expected to skim through the text rather than read it all.

After the children have had enough time to skim through, ask them to write answers to these kinds of questions:

  • What is the story about?
  • Who is the story about?
  • When did the story take place?
  • Why did it happen?
  • Where did it take place?
  • How did it happen?
Extension activity
The children could work in pairs with different stories and set each other shorter time limits in which to skim through them.

They can then ask each other questions along the lines of 'Who? When? Why? What? Where? and How?'.

Plenary
Recap the main techniques of skimming and its uses.

Children feedback their findings from the main and extension skimming activities.
