Sort the facts from the opinions about London

Learning aims
  • The difference between a fact and an opinion
  • Identify facts and opinions in a news report
Introduction
Ask the class if they know what a fact is:
a fact is information based on something that is true.

Ask if they know the difference between a fact and an opinion:
an opinion is what someone thinks or believes about something.

Read through with the class the Press Pack report

As the class read the report help them to identify the facts and the opinions provided by the writer.

Underline the facts and opinions in differing colours.

The facts:

  • Jessica is the writer.
  • She lives in Bermondsey.
  • Some schools have had assemblies about mobile phones.
The opinions:
  • The 'streets are getting worse'.
  • They 'choose what they will have off you'.
  • You 'can't wear it nowadays'.
  • 'I know what it feels like.'
Main activity
Give out copies of the Press Pack report
and the class can underline the facts and opinions in different colours.

The facts:

    London's Green Park
    London's Green Park
  • Ardita is the writer.
  • Over the centuries London has changed.
  • We've just entered the 21st century.
  • Electrical appliances have taken over our lives.
The opinions:
  • 'When I think of London, I...'
  • 'Every statue...seems to come to life and smile.'
  • 'I can see London being transformed from a beautiful place.'
Extension activity
Write a profile of the place where they live and underline the facts and opinions in different colours.

Plenary
Children share their findings and their profiles.
