  Direct speech
Updated 17 May 2002, 10.39
Anthony Daniels
Punctuate a chat with the man inside C-3PO, Anthony Daniels

Learning aims
  • Use speech marks to demarcate direct speech.

  • Rewrite a report as direct speech adding appropriate verbs.
Introduction
Read through the first part of the report
Hotseat: Anthony Daniels - C-3PO.

Explain that the class will be rewriting this report as a description of the actual conversation.

A useful mnemonic for the order of punctuation with direct speech is:

66 What they say (Punctuation) 99

Make a class list of verbs that can be used to describe people speaking. For example:

  • said
  • replied
  • asked
  • responded
  • explained
  • added
  • interrupted
The first part may be rewritten as:

"How hot does it get inside C-3PO's costume?" enquired Lizo.

"Well, it's incredibly hot in the desert sometimes. When we were shooting just now in Tunisia for Attack of the Clones it was summer and I was cooking inside there," answered Anthony.
