John claims he invented the "And Finally" - a silly or light-hearted story to end the programme (no matter how gloomy the earlier news might have been).
This is contested by ITN.
But here is an early example of such a story: scientists in Australia examining toilet sizes to see if people with differently shaped bottoms need different sized loo seats to sit on.
Also in 1974, when Newsround returned after its summer break on 9 September, it began broadcasting four days a week (Monday to Thursday).
