Newsround started on 4 April 1972, with just two typewriters and three people based in the corner of the BBC's foreign news room.
It was dreamt up by the deputy head of children's programmes Edward Barnes, partly to fill the gaps caused by programmes of different lengths.
He interviewed several TV presenters, including Jonathan Dimbleby, before choosing John Craven, then working for as a reporter for BBC regional television in Bristol.
