  Becks admits Euro fitness problem
Updated 27 June 2004, 14.37
David Beckham admitted he had fitness problems
David Beckham has admitted that he wasn't fit enough to play for England at Euro 2004 after a season in Spain.

He told a newspaper that the way he trained with Real Madrid over the last year meant his fitness wasn't as good as it should have been.

He added that he wasn't as fit in the second half of the season as the first, and that hurt his form at Euro 2004.

Becks also told the paper that stories about his private life had affected him, but said he would get through it.

The England skipper said: "It has been tough this season on and off the pitch because of certain situations, but I am strong enough."

Reports from Euro 2004 say Becks and Wayne Rooney both had to do extra work on their fitness when they got to Portugal with the rest of the squad.

Becks wasn't the only Real Madrid player who didn't play at their best at the tournament, with team-mate Raul failing to score for Spain as they went out.
