  Beckham to stay England captain
Updated 25 June 2004, 16.41
David Beckham wants to stay England captain
David Beckham says he won't quit as captain of the England team even though they are out of Euro 2004.

Becks hasn't had a great tournament, and missed penalties against France and in the shoot-out against Portugal.

But he said: "I am England captain and I will not be resigning my role unless the manager wants me to. I love playing football for my country."

He added that he still thinks England are a very good team, and thinks they were a bit unlucky in the tournament.

Fact File
England's penalty shoot-out losses
World Cup 1990 - Lost to Germany in semi-finals
Euro 96 - Lost to Germany in semi-finals
World Cup 1998 - Lost to Argentina in second round
Euro 2004 - Lost to Portugal in quarter-finals
Becks is now 29 and admitted that the World Cup in two years time could be his last major tournament with the national team.

"It might be my last tournament," he said, "but we'll have to wait and see. If my legs are up to it, there might be another."

England boss Sven Goran Eriksson stood up for Becks when he was asked if the Real Madrid man would stay captain, answering "yes".

He added: "I think he was very unlucky with the penalty, his left foot slipped and the ball moved."
