Fans wake up to England Euro exit
Updated 25 June 2004, 08.06
England fans aren't happy on Friday morning
England fans are trying to get over seeing the team go out of Euro 2004 after losing to Portugal on penalties.

The team lost out 6-5 after Darius Vassell and David Beckham missed from the spot, despite having led very early on through Michael Owen's opener.

A lot of fans are very upset with the referee, who disallowed a Sol Campbell goal that might have been given.

Frank Lampard, who scored England's second goal in extra-time said the players were "gutted" after losing.

He said: "We didn't play our best but we worked very hard at certain stages to get back into the game," he said.

Fact File
England's penalty shoot-out losses
World Cup 1990 - Lost to Germany in semi-finals
Euro 96 - Lost to Germany in semi-finals
World Cup 1998 - Lost to Argentina in second round
Euro 2004 - Lost to Portugal in quarter-finals
"And we had a goal at full time that was basically a fair goal taken away. There was nothing wrong with it."

Defender John Terry, who was right next to Campbell when he thought he'd scored said: "I didn't think it was a foul and neither did Sol.

"Michael Owen saw the replay and people back home also said it definitely wasn't a foul. If that had gone in, we would have been through to the next stage."

There was no trouble with England fans in Portugal after the game, although police were needed at a couple of disturbances in the UK.
