  England forced out on penalties
Updated 24 June 2004, 22.41
Luis Figo stands over David Beckham
England are out of Euro 2004 after a 6-5 penalty shootout.

Michael Owen started the scoring for England, by taking advantage of sloppy Portuguese defence on the third minute.

But after Helder Postiga levelled the game with a header and Sol Campbell had a goal controversially disallowed the game went to extra time.

Both sides scored, and a tense penalty shootout followed, with Beckham missing his shot. Darius Vassel failed to get his, and Portugal went through.

Some felt that England deserved to go through after Sol Campbell's apparent goal.

Add that to Beckham's sliced penalty which may have been caused by an uneven spot, and England will feel robbed.

Losing Wayne Rooney to injury seemed to deflate England, and they lost drive

Portugal did play well, keeping their energy up, but England's solid defence were a match for them.

In the end, it all came down to the luck of penalties.
