Day 2: 22 June
British player Elena Baltacha made a winning return to Wimbledon, after reaching the third round at the tournament two years ago.
She beat Spain's Marta Marrero 6-1 6-3 to continue her recent excellent form after spending six months not playing tennis because of a serious medical problem.
Later Jane O'Donoghue became the fourth British woman to reach the second round with a win against US player Lindsay Lee-Waters.
O'Donoghue was a 2-6 6-3 6-3 winner against the player ranked 146 places above her.
But there was no such success for British male player Richard Bloomfield who lost in straight sets to Feliciano Lopez of Spain.
The number 18 seed ended Bloomfield's hopes in the first round 6-4 6-2 7-5.
There were big shocks in both the men's and the women's singles, with big names from Russia going out in both.
In the men's draw 19th seed Marat Safin was knocked out in four sets by another Russian, Dmitry Tursunov, 4-6 7-5 6-3 7-6.
In the women's singles sixth seed Elena Dementieva, who lost in the French Open final, was knocked out, losing 6-4 1-6 6-4 Czech player Sandra Kleinova.
The top women's seed Serena Williams had no such problems, beating Chinese player Zheng Jie 6-3 6-1 to join her sister in the second round.
