F1: Schumacher wins US Grand Prix
Updated 21 June 2004, 10.59
Michael Schumacher in the race
Michael Schumacher has eased to victory in the United States Grand Prix.

The German held off Rubens Barrichello, winning by 2.9secs and extending his championship lead to 18 points over his Ferrari team-mate.

Takuma Sato was third in Sunday's eventful race, while David Coulthard was seventh and Jenson Button retired from fourth place.

It was Michael Schumacher's 78th career victory and his eighth win in the nine races so far this year.

The lead changed hands between Barrichello and Schumacher several times during the race.

Barrichello even managed to briefly challenge his team leader after his final pit stop, forcing Schumacher to aggressively shut the door with 18 laps to go. But he then backed off for a comfortable second place.

"I really had a car to win the race," Barrichello said. "So that is why I am a little bit sorry, despite the great result."

Recovering

Earlier in the race Michael Schumacher saw his brother Ralf taken to hospital after having a high-speed crash on lap 10.

The BMW driver is now recovering and it's hoped he'll be fit for the French Grand Prix.
