  England prepare for crucial clash
Updated 17 June 2004, 14.24
Lots of England fans are in Portugal
England play Switzerland in Euro 2004 on Thursday, knowing defeat will mean they will not qualify from Group B.

And coach Sven Goran Eriksson has decided to change the way England play for the game, swapping the formation used against France for a "diamond".

That means one midfielder sits in front of the defence, one behind the strikers and two in the middle.

It didn't work against Japan when England drew 1-1, but was successful in Turkey when England reached Euro 2004.

But it means Frank Lampard will have to play defensively and Steven Gerrard on the left side of midfield, which neither are very comfortable doing.

However Sven wants to pick his best four midfield players, so has picked them, then chosen a formation, rather than choose a formation and then decide who plays where in it.

The only change in terms of players for England is in defence, where John Terry will replace Ledley King at centre-half.

England will not be out of the tournament if they only draw with Switzerland, but it could make it harder to qualify with only one game left after this one.
