Euro 2004: England lose to France
Updated 14 June 2004, 07.40

England suffered defeat to France after being beaten 2-1 in their opening game in Euro 2004 on Sunday.

Frank Lampard had given England a first-half lead when he rose to head home David Beckham's free-kick.

But Zinedine Zidane stole the match for France by scoring twice in injury time with a free kick and a penalty.

That late double blow left England's players inconsolable at the final whistle, but the French stayed on the pitch to celebrate their lucky win.

Even though David Beckham missed a penalty, England looked to be heading for the perfect start in Group B as they led 1-0 in Lisbon at full time.

But Zidane fired in a free-kick and then scored from the penalty spot after keeper David James brought down Thierry Henry as he chased Steven Gerrard's poor back pass.

France's stunning victory means the holders are at the top Group B with three points, with England at the bottom with none.

Stay positive

But the England team seem determined to stay positive and players seem to be pleased with the way they played the match.

"It was a bit of a mugging and hard to take, but we move on to our next two games knowing we did ourselves proud apart from two minutes in injury time," said England striker Michael Owen.

He also said coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has ordered England's players to get over their disappointment quickly so they can focus on the tournament.

England are now preparing to meet Switzerland in their next match on Thursday.

Switzerland draw with Croatia

Elsewhere in Group B Switzerland and Croatia played a 0-0 draw.

Croatia had the best chance of the first half when Ivica Olic headed against the bar following a defensive error, but 10-man Switzerland managed to hold firm.
