Amazing start to Euro 2004 finals
Updated 12 June 2004, 18.53
The ceremony drew on Portugal's sea-faring past
The Euro 2004 finals kicked off in breath-taking style - with a colourful opening ceremony and a shock defeat for hosts Portugal in the first game.

They went down 2-1 to Greece, who had been the underdogs going into the match. England play their opening game against France on Sunday.

The theme for the opening ceremony was Portugal's rich sea-faring history.

Portuguese adventurers travelled across the globe in the 15th Century and 900 performers recreated these scenes.

A mock-up of an old-fashioned ship with billowing sails was the centrepiece.

Hundreds of dancers formed an ocean and others were dressed up as sea creatures.

The festivities were watched by a sell-out 52,000 crowd.
