Fans land in Portugal for footie
Updated 11 June 2004, 14.35

Thousands of England fans are on their way to Portugal to see the first weekend of action in Euro 2004.

The competition gets going on Saturday with a match between hosts Portugal and Greece, with England preparing to meet France on the pitch on Sunday.

Eleven lucky England mascots have also been named, and are getting ready to join their heroes in the stadium.

But police are keeping a close eye on fans as they want to make sure no hooligans make it to the tournament.

Over 3,000 footie freaks have already arrived in Portugal and over 300,000 more are expected to join them over the next two days.

Police are monitoring ports and airports and have so far stopped 22 people from leaving Britain.

They've also got officers in Portugal acting as spotters, looking out for potential troublemakers

Failed fitness test

John Terry
Back on the pitch it was bad news for England defender John Terry who has failed a fitness test and will miss England's first match.

He damaged a hamstring in the friendly against Japan and joined the team for a light warm-up on Friday but didn't take part in the full training session.
