Updated 03 June 2004, 09.00
The Olympic flame (left) before it boards a plane to Australia
The Olympic flame has left Greece and is heading to Australia to begin its round-the-world relay.

This has signalled the final countdown to the Athens Olympics which starts in just over two months time.

Thousands of torch-bearers will carry the flame around the world over the next five weeks.

And the torch will visit all five continents, including for the first time cities in Africa and Latin America.

The flame, which is being carried on a jumbo jet, will arrive on Friday in Sydney, which hosted the 2000 Olympics.

The Olympic flame will arrive in the UK at the end of June, with a massive free concert being held in London to mark the event.

The six-hour concert will take place on the on The Mall, the wide, ceremonial road that links Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace.

Rowing champion

The flame hasn't been to Britain since the Olympics were last held there, back in 1948.

During its trip through London, the torch will be carried by mix of celebrities and ordinary people before it is handed to five-times Olympic rowing champion, Sir Steve Redgrave, who will run the final leg into the Mall.
