  Diamond formation
Updated 21 May 2004, 14.14

You may have hear quite a bit about something called the diamond before England's first game against France in Euro 2004, but what is it?

It's a formation, which means it's a guide for where the players should stand when the game is happening.

In this case the diamond is where England's four midfield players will stand.

At the bottom of the diamond, stood just in front of the four defenders is a defensive midfielder, normally Nicky Butt.

At the top of the diamond, behind the two strikers, is an attacking midfielder, expected to be Paul Scholes.

The other two midfield positions will probably be taken by David Beckham on the right and Steven Gerrard on the left.

Strengths:
England have a player protecting the defence and another ideally placed to link up with the attack and two players in the middle to win the ball and pass it on.

Weaknesses:
With four central midfield players England won't have many options out wide, so will need their full-backs to push forward to get crosses in.
