Updated 18 May 2004, 12.50
London Olympics bid logo
London has made it to the final shortlist of countries in with a chance of hosting the 2012 Olympics.

Madrid, New York, Paris and Moscow have also made it through to the final vote. But it was bad news for Havana, Leipzig, Rio de Janeiro and Istanbul, which were eliminated from the race.

If London wins the bid it will be the first time it has held the Olympic Games for 62 years.

The city which wins the bid will be announced in 2005.

Moscow

Although 2012 might seem a long way off, the city chosen to hold this massive sporting event has to know way in advance so it has plenty of time to plan and build the facilities.
