Sven names squad for Euro 2004
Updated 17 May 2004, 14.27
England coach Sven Goran Eriksson
England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has named his squad for England's Euro 2004 bid with no real surprises.

The Swede decided to take striker Darius Vassell ahead of Jermain Defoe, although Defoe is on standby.

Defenders Jamie Carragher and Ledley King both won places in the squad, with Rio Ferdinand banned and Jonathan Woodgate and Gareth Southgate injured.

Eriksson said: "Hopefully they will all stay fit - if they do I think we have a very, very good team."

The England coach added: "We're good enough to win Euro 2004, provided if they all stay fit, though you need a little bit of luck to win a big tournament."

The squad could change before 2 June if there any problems, but after that a player can only be replaced if they get a fresh injury.

David Beckham is expected to be named captain of the squad, which may cheer him up after being sent off on Sunday.

He was playing for Real Madrid against bottom-of-the-table Murcia when he was shown the red card for swearing at an assistant referee.
