Double gold Kelly talks to Ellie
Updated 31 August 2004, 18.06
Kelly and Ellie
Kelly Holmes is Britain's hero of the moment after winning two golds at the Olympic Games.

Fresh from her triumphs she took time to chat with Ellie.

Ellie: So how does it feel!?

Kelly: Still really strange - the fact that it's something I've wanted for so long - since the age of 14 - almost 20 years - and not to get one but two - it's still really unbelievable!

Ellie: It went better than you expected - what did you think was going to happen?

Kelly: Obviously my preparation was geared to the championships - I went in there dreaming I would get one gold medal but sometimes you don't think your dream's gonna become reality.

So when I got the 800 metre one I was so shocked - I was so shocked to win that field. People said my face was a picture - it was - it was oh my God - I've done it!

To go back and get the 1500 on top of that - I could never ask for anything more.

Ellie: How do you think what you've achieved will inspire the next generation of sports stars?

Kelly: I just hope that one thing I might have done over my career would inspire someone.

I've been through so many ups and downs as an athlete - good and bad things have happened...

I've been involved with athletics performance days for children in the past.

I'm also arranging a camp for potential athletes to come and train in South Africa for a month.

Hopefully I can pass on a bit of my knowledge - anything to inspire someone.

If someone's 14 now and have a dream then why not go for it - don't give up and make it through!

Ellie: What was going through your mind as you were competing?

Kelly: You just become focused in the zone of running.

Going for gold: In the home straight!

First of all I'm so nervous anyway - I thought - it is my last Olympics, the last chance to try and achieve my dream. It was all about qualifying for the finals and when you reach the final it's about running to your race plan. Which was very hard.

Ellie: You really stormed up from the back - you were wonderful!

Kelly: My priority was to race how I was gonna race - conserve as much energy and then as people are going to ease up a bit I could become stronger.

It wasn't really that I went faster at the end more that they slowed down cos they'd gone so fast at the beginning.

Ellie: I think you're being modest! How do you think team GB has done?

Kelly: Team GB has done fantastic! 30 medals, 9 golds across 13 sports. You can't ask more from a team. It was a slow start but as soon as we started getting the medals in it didn't stop.

Kelly arriving back in the UK

Obviously all the focus is on the medallists but everybody did so much more than they expected.

Some people might be a bit disappointed but that's cos they've got such high goals.

In athletics we had more finalists than we've ever had and most of them are youngsters - we'll do fantastic in the future.

Ellie: What about you - will you be in Beijing in 2008?

Kelly: I think I'll be a little too old!

I'm not planning on retiring this year or next year - I just want to enjoy it a little bit now.

Turn up on the track and have the fact I'm a double gold medallist mentioned and have a big smile on my face!
