It's a deal: United sign Rooney
Updated 01 September 2004, 07.15
Wayne Rooney signs autographs at Manchester United
Wayne Rooney is going to Manchester United - and it's official.

United have completed the signing of the 18-year-old in a deal said to be worth around 27 million, making him the most expensive teenage player ever.

Rooney passed a medical test for United on Tuesday but the deal was not confirmed until both clubs had bashed out a final agreement.

"I'm excited to be joining a club as big as Manchester United. I feel this can only improve my career," he said.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I am very excited. I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years.

"Everyone is delighted by this signing."

Rooney was at United's Carrington training ground on Tuesday morning so doctors could check him over. He won't play yet though as he's still injured.

United had to sign Rooney if they wanted him as Tuesday was transfer deadline day.

That means it is the last day that clubs are allowed to sign players until the transfer window opens again in January.
