Top clubs compete to sign Rooney
Updated 26 August 2004, 17.20
Wayne Rooney is back in training for Everton
The race to sign teenage footie star Wayne Rooney is hotting up as Tuesday's transfer deadline gets closer.

Rooney's current club Everton has now turned down bids from Newcastle and Manchester United for the 18-year-old.

Both clubs are believed to have offered 20m, with United later increasing their bid to 23.5m.

It's thought that Everton are looking for a 30m price tag for the young star, who scored four goals for England in the Euro 2004 tournament.

Rooney has so far refused to sign a new five-year contract worth 50,000 a week with Everton.

Keen

Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson is keen to recruit the teenager.

"We have made our intentions clear we would like the boy," he said.
