  F1: Schumacher wins in Australia
Updated 07 March 2004, 09.51
Michael Schumacher won the Australian Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher raced to victory in the opening Grand Prix of the season, easily winning in Australia.

He finished 13.6 seconds ahead of his Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello, who was more than 30 seconds in front of third-placed Fernando Alonso.

The Ferraris led the race from the start after they qualified in first and second the day before.

Jenson Button was the best-placed British driver in sixth, while David Coulthard finished in eighth.

Much was expected of the two Williams drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher but they couldn't go quick enough.

Montoya's poor start played a big part in his fifth-place finish while Ralf finished ahead of him in fourth.

The next race is in Malaysia on 21 March.
